Tattooed Woman

I shot yesterday with a tattooed woman.  Really tattooed and with no end in sight. She started when she was eighteen.  She's been busy.  She will have little skin left to show soon.  Just ink.  She was a beautiful woman who had gone through rough times.  I'm not sure I can tell her stories yet.  I haven't asked.  I will ask, though, for both permission and more stories.  I love stories.

I shot this one in Fuji as I try to figure out a new processes.  It is not like the Polaroids though it is an instant film shot with the same camera.  It is just a crazy, unpredictable film for me.  If you are only working with the peel apart image, however, it is fine.

I keep staring at this photograph.  It is simply the first one I processed, not the best of several.  I think it works.  I hope.  Perhaps I stare just because it is so different from the others, a different texture, darker, a different hue.  Perhaps it is the model, her tattoos and troubles.  I worry about making photographs.  I can't imagine what worries she might have.  There is no going back, only on.  The picture breaks my heart.

  1. I have a friend like this. Her husband is a tattoo artist and spends his spare time adding to her collection of tattoos. Her stories are exaggerated and ever-changing so it's hard to figure out what's real. We've discussed taking a picture of her but I don't know if I could do it.
