(Don't Be Afraid)
I don't know what to say. The New Year has snuck up on me again. I knew it was coming, but I've done nothing about it. I mean, I'm in town and have no plans. Chances are I'll be in bed when the clock strikes 2012. I had no love affair with 2011, a monkish year full of work, both at the factory and personal. The new year seems to hold no great promise. Perhaps it will for you.
(if this doesn't play on your computer, you can listen to it here)
So he's retired
Lives with his sister in a furnished flat
He's got this suit that
He'll never wear outside without a hat
His hair is white but he looks half his age
He looks like Jimmy Stewart in his younger days.
And honestly, I might be
Stupid to think love is love
But I do
And you've waited so long and
I've waited long enough for you.
My mother's calling
From where she's living up in troy, vermont
She tries to tell me
A father figure must be what I want
I've always thought age makes no difference
Am I the only one to whom that's making sense?
And honestly, I might be
Stupid to think love is love
But I do
And you've waited so long and
I've waited long enough for you.
The day I met him he was raking leaves
In his tiny yard.
Of course I know that
We've only got ten years, or twenty, left
But to be honest
I'm happy with whatever time we get
Depending on which book you read
Sometimes it takes a lifetime to get what you need.
And honestly, I might be
Stupid to think love is love
But I do
And you've waited so long and
I've waited long enough for you.

Happy 2012 CS
ReplyDeleteMake it a good one. This is it. December 21, 2012 and it's all over.
Driving back from the city tonight I saw these neon signs warning drivers:
Obey the speed limit or you will be arrested.
you will be arrested? definitely? it was odd.
anyway. kisses.
i was hoping to listen to the song/video that you posted at midnight but it gives me the message: "This video contains content from UMG. It is not available in your country."
ReplyDeleteI thought that a UMG was a device that prevents women from getting pregnant.
I read the lyrics, twice. Luckily I'm an Aimee Mann fan so I have the track in my library. Aimee Mann is about 10 years older than me but I can still dig her vibe. She seems like she is a really groovy chick.
Have you listened to Sleater-Kinney ? They were a truly great rock-n-roll band. Aimee Mann does a guest appearance on Portlandia, A show that Carrie Brownstein's in, the one with Fred Armisin. 9Carrie was in Sleater-Kinney, etc.)

Coming up Close
One night in iowa, he and I in a borrowed car
Went driving in the summer, promises in every star
Out in the distance I could hear some people laughing
I felt my heart beat back a weekends worth of sadness
There was a farmhouse that had long since been deserted
We stopped and carved our hearts into the wooden surface
We thought just for an instant we could see the future
We thought for once we knew what really was important
Coming up close
Everything sounds like welcome home
Come home and oh, by the way
Dont you know that I could make
A dream thats barely half-awake come true
I wanted to say -
But anything I could have said
I felt somehow that you already knew
We got back in the car and listened to a Dylan tape
We drove around the fields until it started getting late
And I went back to my hotel room on the highway
And he just got back in his car and drove away
Coming up close
Everything sounds like welcome home
Come home and oh, by the way
Dont you know that I could make
A dream thats barely half-awake come true
I wanted to say - but anything I could have said
I felt somehow that you already knew
Coming up close
Everything sounds like welcome home
Come home
Coming up close
Everything sounds like welcome home
Come home come on home
- Aimee Mann
I have reached out to Carrie to lead my new band, The Sagnymphicant Typos.

I'm not familiar with the other. Happy New Year, man. I was way too asleep to call.
R, I hope yours was wonderful.
I keep posting but my posts never show up. Yes, I like Aimee Mann. I didn't mean to sound as if I didn't, I do.
ReplyDeleteSleater-Kinney is more punk-rock, but they are quite good at what they do.
Happy New year to you too, call anytime.
