Re-Elect Clinton

I've been trying unsuccessfully to find a clip of the opening scene to "Blood Simple" that I could post here.  Perhaps the link above will work for you, perhaps not.  This scene has stuck with me like peanut butter since I first saw it in 1984.  There are times when I can barely remember the movie, but I have never forgotten for a moment the opening.  It is just perfect, and it is perfect for the times.  It is a reminder of what divides us now.

I haven't watched any of either political convention.  I just can't stand to do it.  So much money spent for such as this.  You might wonder why.  It is not to "sway voters."  I'm positive they can't.  Do you imagine anyone in America right now sitting on the fence?  Do you hear anyone saying, "I'm not sure yet.  I'm not sure who I will vote for."  The election is so polarized that it is just impossible to think of such a thing.  They are not spending the money to sway voters.  They are spending money to get them out of their chairs and to the polls.  Whoever gets most of their people to do that will win.

But this morning, I read that Clinton knocked the ball out of the park last night in his speech at the convention.  I couldn't help myself.  I watched most of it this morning.  And he did.  But who could be surprised?  This is what Clinton always did best.  He is the rockstar of orators.  He loves the stage as much as Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan.  It is where he wants to be.  And it is where he should be.  It keeps him out of trouble.

Of all the things he said in his speech, and there were plenty of memorable lines, the one that made me weepy was that though he disagreed with many people, he had never learned to hate them.  And for me, that is the key to things.

The Politics of Hate were in full force when Clinton was in office.  And it has grown.

I am like Clinton in this.  It makes all the difference.  I think of World War II and the demeanor of two leaders:  FDR and Hitler.

I am sick of politics.  I prefer Shakespeare.
