Blowing the Fuse

"I felt a little impaired."

"I've never felt that way."

This picture is actually of Q when he was a child, but he has changed much in the last few years and as he often proclaims now--"Safety First!"

Oh, kids, safety is important, but it certainly shouldn't be first.

That is what we say, at least, until the shit hits the fan and things turn bad.  In just a second, that little boy is about to learn a life lesson.  It will be shocking.

I feel like that over and over again.  The problems lie with what we get away with.  If he is anything like me and survives this with just a scare, he will try to talk other little boys into doing it.

"I did it.  I'm not saying I'd do it again, but it seems only right you would want to try it once.  I mean, if you have any sense of adventure!"

I find, however, that I am getting too old to stick the knife in the light socket.  Still. . . it must be genetic.

"I don't know," my friend C.C. says when I ask him why he does things.  "It seems the right thing at the time."

We both know the consequences, but we are Americans and believe in individualism.  We are different than the others.  What happens to them will not happen to us.  The odds are against us, but they have always been.  Put your money on the underdog.  They are bound to win sometimes.

I'm going to get new friends.  I went past a big, upper class church on my walk yesterday morning.  The women were pretty, the men healthy, the kids beautiful.  They all had smiles on their faces.  It looked like something an ad man would draw up.  They had nice clothes and cars and their laughter filled the heavens.  Surely these people will love me and take me to their bosoms.  I'll promise them that I won't stick the knife in the electric socket any more.  I've learned my lesson.  It blows the fuses every time.
